Short Biography

Thomas Kundinger, born in Eichstätt, received his B. Sc and M. Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology from Technical University of Munich (TUM) in March 2014 and April 2017 respectively. He wrote his Master Thesis at the Institute for Human-Machine Communication at TUM in cooperation with Audi Electronics Venture GmbH in Gaimersheim on the topic “Using bus data and machine learning for adapting a human-machine-interface to reduce driver distraction”. Since May 2017 he is a Ph.D. candidate at AUDI AG in cooperation with Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt (THI) and Johannes Kepler University (JKU) in Linz, Austria. His research interests focus on driver drowsiness detection using wearable devices and in-vehicle sensors for future automated driving.

Topics of Research

  • Conduction of studies for the investigation of driver drowsiness for future automated driving
  • Investigation of the suitability of physiological measures in general and based on wearable devices (e.g. fitness tracker, smartwatches) for accurate and reliable detection of driver drowsiness
  • Investigation of additional in-vehicle sensors that are to be considered to increase the reliability and accuracy of the drowsiness detection system
  • Design and investigation of new modeling approaches/detection algorithms and evaluation along with existing mechanisms that are suitable for different levels of automation and across individuals
