Persuasion in Transport Applications

The aim of this workshop is to bring together people with interest in Persuasion and/or Automotive research and to discuss, share knowledges, and take away insights, strategies, and tips of how to use persuasive technology to improve the driver-vehicle interaction loop.

Topics of Interest

Potential topics to be discussed at the workshop include, but are not limited to:

I. Theories and Models

  1. Theories and models in Psychological, Cognitive, Affective Sciences about (1) motives, rewards, incentives, reinforcements and (2) behavior modification
  2. Theories and models in Affective Computing
  3. Theories and models in Positive Design/Technology/Computing
  4. Direction: Persuasion for long-term vs. short-term behavior adaptation
  5. Ethical issues: What is the direction of persuasion, who decides it?, etc.
  6. Trust: persuasive technology or manipulative technology

II. Modalities and Strategies

  1. Speech-based dialogue between driver and car
  2. Implicit/subliminal/unobtrusive/ambient driver-car communication
  3. Multimodal interactions (visual, auditory, haptic, gesture; combinations)
  4. Reminder and preventive strategies
  5. Gamification of behavior modification technologies

III. Applications in Vehicle Environments

  1. Intelligent Means of Transportation: Promote fuel effcient driving, Detect and prevent or mitigate a) fatigue driving, b) emotional driving, c) use of mobile phone while driving
  2. Social Cars: Provide collective knowledge about driving skills and traffic pattern, Promote car pooling, etc.
  3. Autonomous Cars: Persuade the driver based on social networks (other people's opinion), rather than a car, Expand the driver's social abilities by initiating a contact with other real people, by using a car, Persuasive technology to support the transition between different levels of control in partial automation, Application of persuasive technology (serious games) to establish cooperative self organization (i. e., lessen selfish behavior)

Expected Outcome and Publications Plans

The aim of this workshop is to bring together people with interest in Persuasion and/or Automotive research. The expected outcome is a review of the state of the art of persuasion in transport. Participants are expected to discuss, share their knowledge, and take away insights, strategies, and tips of how to use persuasive technology to improve the driver-vehicle interaction loop. To preserve workshop results, all the workshop material will be featured on the workshop website and it is planned to write a summary article, e. g., for ACM Computing Surveys. Based on number and quality of papers, we will further consider proposing a special issue covering the broader topic of the workshop. Potential outlets are the "Elsevier Pervasive and Mobile Computing Journal" or the "International Journal of Pervasive and Mobile Computing".
